Even and Odd Numbers

What is an Even number?

Any natural number that can be divided into two equal natural numbers is called an Even number. The numbers 1,2,3….infinity are natural numbers.

Example: 2,4,6,8, ……

2 = 1 + 1  [ 1 is not a natural number]

4 = 2 + 2  [ 2 is not a natural number]

6 = 3 + 3  [ 3 is not a natural number]

8 = 4 + 4  [ 4 is not a natural number]

So, it is shown that even numbers can be divided into two equal natural numbers.

What is an Odd Number?

Any natural number that can not be divided into two equal natural numbers is called an Odd number.

Example: 1,3,5,7,….

1 ÷ 2 = ½  [ ½ is not a natural number]

3 ÷ 2 = 1.5  [ 1.5 is not a natural number]

5 ÷ 2 = 2.5  [ 2.5 is not a natural number]

7 ÷ 2 = 3.5  [ 3.5 is not a natural number]

So, it is shown that even numbers cannot be divided into two equal natural numbers.

1. Prove that an even number + 1 = an odd number.

Solution:

We know,

Even number = 2n  [n = natural number]

21=2, 22=4, 23=6…..

So, 2,4,6,… are even numbers.

Now, 2 + 1 = 3 is an odd number.

4 + 1 = 5 is an odd number.

6 + 1 = 7 is an odd number.

So, an even number + 1 = an odd number [Proved]
