Place Value and Face Value

What is Place Value?

The value of a digit in a number based on its position in the number is called its place value.

Example:

Place value of 6 in 360 = 6 tens = 60.

Understand place Value (Up to 3 digits):

(i) Know the place names:

Look at the below table and read the names of three places for 3 digits in a number.

3
1
5
Hundreds Place
Tens Place
Ones Place

 So, The place value name of 1st digit from the right is Ones place.

The place value name of 2nd digit from the right is Tens place.

The place value name of 3rd digit from the right is Hundreds place.

(ii) Calculate Place Value:

Ones place digit value = 1×Ones place digit.

Tens place digit value = 10×Tens place digit.

Hundreds place digit value = 100×Hundreds place digit.

Suppose a number is 763.

For 763,

Ones place digit = 3

Tens Place digit = 6

Hundreds Place digit = 7

So,

Ones place digit value = 1×3 = 3.

Tens place digit value = 10×6 = 60.

Hundreds place digit value = 100×7 = 700.

What is Face Value?

Face value is the original value of a digit as it is mentioned in a number. The actual digit value = its face value, not its place value.

Suppose a number is 387.

Face value of 8 in 387 is 8.

1. Calculate the place value of the following number's digits.

(a) 351

(b) 306

(c) 279

(d) 666

(e) 64

Solution:

(a) 351

Place value of Ones place digit = 1×1 = 1.

Place value of Tens place digit = 10×5 = 50.

Place value of Hundreds place digit = 100×3 = 300.

(b) 306

Place value of Ones place digit = 1×6 = 6.

Place value of Tens place digit = 10×0 = 0

Place value of Hundreds place digit = 100×3 = 300.

(c) 279

Place value of Ones place digit = 1×9 = 9.

Place value of Tens place digit = 10×7 = 70.

Place value of Hundreds place digit = 100×2 = 200

(d) 666

Place value of Ones place digit = 1×6 = 6.

Place value of Tens place digit = 10×6 = 60.

Place value of Hundreds place digit = 100×6 = 600.

(e) 64

Place value of Ones place digit = 1×6 = 6.

Place value of Tens place digit = 10×6 = 60.

2. Calculate the place value of the digits in 636, 446, 908 and 999.

Solution:

636 = 6 hundreds 3 tens and 6 ones = 600 + 30 + 6

So, In the number 636, Place value of 6, 3 and 6 = 600, 30 and 6.

446 = 4 hundreds 4 tens and 6 ones = 400 + 40 + 6

So, In the number 446, Place value of 4, 4 and 6 = 400, 40 and 6.

908 = 9 hundreds 0 tens and 8 ones = 900 + 0 + 8

So, In the number 908, Place value of 9, 0 and 8 = 900, 0 and 8.

999 = 9 hundreds 9 tens and 9 ones = 900 + 90 + 9

So, In the number 999, Place value of 9, 9 and 9 = 900, 90 and 9.

3. What is the face value of 6 in 363?

Answer: 6

4. What is the face value of 3 in 321?
