Subtraction: Subtracting 1-Digit Number

What is Subtraction?

Subtraction means to take away a number of objects from a collection or fixed objects.

Example:

Jacson has 5 balls. Jacson gives 2 balls to Julie. So, then the subtraction sentence will be:

5 – 3 = 2.

Here, 3 is taken away from 5. And 2 stays.

What is subtracting 1-Digit number?

When a single digit number or object is taken away, then it is called subtracting 1-digit number.

Subtraction Sign:

We use minus (-) sign for subtraction.

Subtract 0 from a number:

When we subtract 0 form a number or object, the number or object remains the same.

Example:

1 – 0 = 1.

5 – 0 = 5.

Process of Subtracting 1-digit number:

5 – 3 = ?

or,

Start counting from the number after 3 and count until to reach 5: 4, 5. Here total steps = 2.

So, 5 – 3 = 2.

Solution:

Start counting from the number after 3, count until to reach 9: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.

Here total steps = 6.

So, 9 – 3 = 6.

2. 8 – 4 = ?

Solution:

Start counting from the number after 4, count until to reach 8: 5, 6, 7, 8.

Here total steps = 4.

So, 8 – 4 = 4.

3. 9 – 5 = ?

Solution:

Start counting from the number after 5, count until to reach 9: 6, 7, 8, 9.

Here total steps = 4.

So, 9 – 5 = 4.

4. (i) Take away 1 from 9. How many left?

    (ii) Take away 5 from 6. How many left?

    (iii) Take away 0 from 5. How many left?

    (iv) Take away 8 from 8. How many left?

Answer:

(i) 9 – 1 = 8.

(ii) 6 – 5 = 1.

(iii) 5 – 0 = 5.

(iv) 8 – 8 = 0.

5. Find the difference.

(i) 25 – 4 = ?

(ii) 84 – 3 = ?

(iii) 26 – 4 = ?

(iv) 14 – 9 = ?

(v) 19 – 6 = ?

(vi) 28 – 7 = ?

Answer:

(i) 25 – 4 = 21.

(ii) 84 – 3 = 81.

(iii) 26 – 4 = 22.

(iv) 14 – 9 = 5.

(v) 19 – 6 = 13.

(vi) 28 – 7 = 21.

6. You have 9 cookies. You give 6 cookies to your sister. How many cookies do you have now?

Answer:

9 – 6 = 3.

I have 3 cookies now.
